Blackstar Coffee reopens the West End courtyard

Six months of renovations wrapped on Monday 22 September — single-origin flights are back on the daily menu (five rotating regions, $18 for the tasting board), the brunch menu is now a permanent 6am-3pm affair (previously weekends only), and the bicycle-only side gate off Boundary Street is open again after being sealed since March. Owners Shez Gordon and Miles have kept the courtyard's shade sails, added two more heaters for winter, and quietly upgraded the espresso to a Slayer LP twin-grouphead — that alone is worth the pilgrimage. Weekend queues form from 8:30am; Tuesday-Thursday mornings are the sweet spot for a proper sit-down. Streetside power banks are available for anyone working remotely.

Free river-run clubs kick off at South Bank this Wednesday

Wednesday 24 September, 6am start — 5km loops from the Piazza with pace groups from 4:30/km through to 6:30/km, all abilities genuinely welcome. Post-run coffee is on the Piazza (free filter, sponsored by four local roasters rotating monthly), and there's a foam-roller station set up under the Wheel of Brisbane for post-run maintenance. Bring your own water bottle — refill stations at both ends of the loop, no plastic supplied. First-timers get a fluoro slap-band from the pace leaders so they can flag anyone if they need a stop. The programme continues every Wednesday through summer plus a Saturday 6:30am 10km option starting 4 October.

James Street's rooftop bar Vertigo opens Friday

New Farm's laneway strip lands its most-anticipated opening of 2026 — Vertigo is a nine-storey rooftop from ex-Aria alumni Andrew Maccourt and Su-Yen Lim, with a signature negroni smoked with Queensland macadamia husk (built table-side, $28 and worth every cent). Doors open Friday 26 September 5pm sharp, first Friday runs on a walk-in-only rule (no reservations for the opening weekend), and the kitchen team is ex-Sean's Bondi pastry lead Fumie Hara. Music policy is jazz+afro-Cuban rotating live sets Wednesday through Saturday, plus a permanent Sunday matinee slot for local vocalists. The rooftop is 32°C-airconditioned inside and shaded outdoor — sunset views over the Story Bridge on the west side are unreal.

Wellness — five best spring cold-plunge spots

Streets Beach at 6am is still free (and freshwater — the ideal shock-plunge because it's chlorinated to 21°C in September), but the wave of new operators is what to watch. Newstead's Reset Studio runs $25 walk-ins with a sauna+plunge+lounge combo, book online for the 6-9am windows or you'll queue. Paddington's Sanctuary is $30 members / $40 casuals, four plunge tanks temperature-graded from 4° to 12°, plus a mangrove-view relaxation room that is genuinely one of the quietest spots in Brisbane. West End Wellness has a Sunday-morning 90-minute class combining plunge, breathwork and yoga for $55. All four take walk-ins on weekdays.

Farmers' markets this Saturday

Powerhouse (6-11am), Northey Street (Windsor, 6-11am) and Rocklea (5am-10am for the wholesale early-birds, general public from 6am) all fire up Saturday. Rocklea's Sicilian cannoli stall is confirmed back after a winter break — get there before 8:30am or you'll be looking at the empty tray. Powerhouse has three new stalls this month: a specialty raw honey stall from Boonah, a Vietnamese banh mi cart run by two ex-Long Time chefs, and a stone-fruit-focused stall from a Stanthorpe orchard doing pre-order boxes. Northey Street continues its always-organic charter and has a free 8am kids' vegetable-planting workshop this weekend.

Slow living — where locals actually decompress

Six thoughtful spots across the city that Brisbane locals treat as their proper reset zones. Riverbend Books & Café in Bulimba stays open until 9pm Thursday-Sunday and has a courtyard reading room that fits maybe eight people, quietly. Paddington's Sanctuary Yoga Studio does 90-minute mangrove-view sessions on Sundays at 4pm — the room faces the estuary and the light is worth the class fee alone. The New Farm ferry route Bulimba-to-Teneriffe is the sightseeing tour no tourist takes; $3.50 with a Go Card and it's a 22-minute mini-cruise. Also — the Toowong Village public-library reading loft, the Kangaroo Point cliffs walking track after 6pm, and the Mount Coot-tha lookout at sunrise.
